On this day: A new era begins

10th July 2018

The Liberty Stadium officially opened on this day in 2005.

Located in Landore, the stadium replaced Vetch Field and became the new home of the Swans.

The first game at the Liberty took place 13 days later, with the Swans playing out a 1-1 draw in a pre-season friendly with Premier League side Fulham.

The Liberty became the first Premier League stadium in Wales when the Swans gained promotion to the top flight in 2011 and hosted continental football during the club’s Europa League journey two years later.

July 10 also saw the Swans complete the signings of Jonathan de Guzman and Chico Flores in 2012.

Dutchman de Guzman scored 16 goals in 93 appearances during his two-year loan spell from Villarreal.

He famously netted a brace in the Capital One Cup final win over Bradford City at Wembley in 2013, as well as a stunning free-kick to complete the memorable 3-0 victory over Valencia that same year.

Spanish centre-half Chico also spent two years in SA1, making 75 appearances in all competitions.
