De Guzman rues missed chances

27th February

Jonathan de Guzman was left to rue the missed chances as Swansea City's Europa League adventure was ended by Napoli.

Following a goalless first leg at the Liberty Stadium, both sides had it all to play for in the Stadio San Paolo.

But it was the home side that took the lead when Lorenzo Insigne beat the offside trap before coolly lobbing the ball over Michel Vorm.

However, the Swans responded superbly and deservedly levelled when de Guzman finished off a fine passing move to secure the Swans a vital away goal on the night.

Wilfried Bony had a glorious chance in the second half but he headed straight at Pepe Reina, before Gonzalo Higuain put Napoli back in front with just twelve minutes to play.

The Swans pushed hard for another equaliser that would have seen them through, but after Dwight Tiendalli was denied by a fine stop from Reina, Gokhan Inler sealed the win in stoppage time as Napoli broke clear.

"Everyone is gutted," said de Guzman. "We came here with great confidence I think we showed that on the pitch.

"We could have gone through to the next round but Napoli did well in the final part of the game and put us under a lot of pressure.

"We played a lot of good football in the first leg, and we did the same here. After they scored the first goal we came back into it, played our stuff and got the goal - it's just very unlucky that we haven't gone through.

"We were dominating the game more or less, but if you don't take your chances you won't win the game. Looking back at both games we could have scored a few goals."

Following their exit from the Europa League, the Swans now return to Premier League action on Sunday when they host Crystal Palace.

And de Guzman looked ahead to that test at the Liberty, as well as looking back at this year's European adventure.

"It's a very important game," he said. "And if we take the positives from tonight then we should be able to win.

"It's been a great experience to play in the competition. All the players have enjoyed and hopefully we can come back again."
