Swansea City Women defender Ellie Lake believes the Swans have turned a corner in terms of mentality following their 2-1 victory over league champions Wrexham at The Rock.

Lake gave the Swans a perfect start with her third goal of the season in all competitions, striking inside six minutes, and Swansea created further chances during a strong opening spell.

They doubled their advantage before the break through Aimee Deacon for a deserved two-goal cushion at half-time.

Wrexham responded after the interval, with Genero Adran Premier golden boot winner Katie Barker pulling a goal back, but Swansea held firm to secure a valuable three points and end a run of four consecutive defeats.

And The result provided a significant momentum boost ahead of the Bute Energy Welsh Cup final against Cardiff City on April 19.

Lake believes the Swans showed real resilience, admitting it was a game they may have struggled to see out earlier in the season, and highlighted the togetherness of the squad as a key factor in getting over the line.

“I’m buzzing. It was a really top performance from everyone, and it was something we needed after the last few games. We know we haven’t been at the level we expect of ourselves, but to get that win heading into the cup final – especially coming here with everything around the occasion – I’m really proud of the girls," she said.

"To hold on the way we did shows how much we’ve improved mentally. A few months ago, we might have crumbled and ended up losing or drawing, so it shows how far we’ve come. Even though we’ve had a few defeats, we’ve continued to improve as the season has gone on, and I think we showed that.

"I love this club, and it’s the reason I came back in the summer. To see how well the group has gelled from the start of the season to now has been fantastic, and that goes for the staff as well. You can really feel everything coming together.

"Everyone is playing for the shirt, and everyone wants to be involved in the cup final. We know Cardiff well because we face them so often, and it would be great to cap off a really good season with a trophy.”
