Liam Cullen | We showed a different side to our game
Liam Cullen felt Swansea City showed a different side to their game as they dug in to grind out a 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
The Wales international struck the winner in East Lancashire for the second time in three seasons, calmly dispatching Adam Idah’s astute pass into the net with a low strike 23 minutes from time.
That completed the Swansea fightback, with the visitors having trailed to a Todd Cantwell header prior to a stunning volley from Goncalo Franco just before the break.
Head coach Alan Sheehan acknowledged it was not the prettiest of wins, and Cullen felt the way the Swans – having been frustrated at conceding late in halves of recent games – saw the game out to secure the three points was an important moment for the squad.
“We were saying after the game that we could have made it easier for ourselves and our performance levels could have been a bit higher, but this is a tough league and this is a tough place to come to,” he said.
“We have experienced that over the years as I think this is just the second win here in as long as I can remember.
“So they certainly don’t make it easy for you here, and although it may not have been the prettiest I think we showed another side to our game tonight.
“In recent weeks we have been disappointed with conceding late goals, so to see that out is a big confidence boost for us.”
Cullen had also scored the winner when the Swans beat Rovers in their own backyard during the 2023-24 season, meaning he has had a key role in two of the only three Swansea wins at the ground in 53 years.
The academy product has had to be patient in recent weeks, but he was glad to take the chance to contribute on Tuesday night.
“The first one of the season is sometimes the hardest one to get, and it’s taken me a bit longer than I would have liked,” he said.
“I am just really happy to come on and help the boys get three points for the team because it keeps us moving the right way in the league.
“I have got a little bit of a habit of scoring here, the boys were reminding me after the game about the winner here a couple of seasons ago.
“Hopefully that can continue in the games to come.”
