Stephen Kingsley made his debut while Adam King also featured as Crewe were edged out 1-0 at Wigan in League One.
Kingsley, who joined Crewe on a 93-day loan last week, played 80 minutes before being replaced due to cramp while King played for the full game.
In League Two, Connor Roberts made his sixth appearance for Yeovil in their 2-0 defeat at Oxford.
The loss leaves the Glovers on three points from five matches, while they face Barnet tonight in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Huish Park.
Modou Barrow came off the bench as Blackburn Rovers were held 0-0 by Bolton.
The winger replaced Nathan Delfouneso with 12 minutes remaining as he made his fifth appearance for the Ewood Park club, who have picked up three points from five games.
Barrow will be in international action this week as he is part of the Gambia squad that takes on Cameroon in an African Cup of Nations qualifier.
Kenji Gorre came off the bench as Den Haag were beaten 4-0 by leaders Ajax in the Eredivisie.
Den Haag were already trailing 3-0 when Gorre was introduced at the Amsterdam Arena, with this defeat leaving his side on five points from four games.
Meanwhile, Oliver Davies was an unused sub as Kilmarnock were beaten 1-0 at Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership.
