Maddy Murray | Our attacking play has improved

Swansea City Women’s midfielder Maddy Murray says she is pleased to see the team being rewarded with goals in recent weeks, reflecting the hard work they put into their attacking play throughout the week in training.

Murray netted the Swans’ second goal in their 3–1 victory over Aberystwyth Town in the opening round of the Bute Energy Welsh Cup. Aimee Deacon had opened the scoring in the 17th minute, before a stunning long-range effort from Chloe Chivers early in the second half all but secured Swansea’s place in the round of 16.

The three goals against Aberystwyth mean the Swans have now scored an incredible 28 goals in their last six matches across all competitions. Murray believes the goals are a deserved reward for the work put in on the training ground, and says it provides a strong foundation heading into their return to league action against Wrexham, where she insists the Swans are still fully in the running for the title.

“I’m really proud of the team. It was nice to get a goal personally as I haven’t been scoring much lately but to score a header especially I’m really happy with.

“The girls worked really hard for the win, especially towards the end with the weather conditions being tough, but thankfully we got the win and booked our place in the next round.

“I think it was important to get that second goal just before half time, Aber did come out a lot stronger in the second half which we expected but Chivers got the third goal early which helped us.

“It was also good to get another three goals today. It’s definitely something we’ve been working on improving this season, and we’ve scored a lot more than we usually would, so we’re getting rewarded for that.” She said.

“Wrexham is a huge game next week. The games against them and Cardiff are the ones you really want to win, as everyone talks about them being in the battle at the top, but we’re definitely in the conversation ourselves. Hopefully we can show that with a win next weekend.”
