Alan Tate helped Crewe to their first win in six games as they beat Coventry City 2-1 in League One.
Tate featured for the whole game as Crewe, for whom ex-Swans loanee Febian Brandy opened the scoring, moved to within five points of 20th-placed Gillingham.
Moving to League Two, Daniel Alfei came off the bench in Northampton's home defeat to Burton.
Alfei came on after 68 minutes for the Cobblers, who levelled with ten minutes to go before a late Burton winner.
Northampton remain a point off the play-off spots in ninth position after 12 games.
Newport sit just point behind them after Scott Tancock and James Loveridge featured in a fine 3-1 win over York City at Rodney Parade.
Tancock starred for an hour before being replaced while Loveridge made his first start and featured for the whole 90 minutes.
