Monk pleased with positive Reading test

24th July

Garry Monk was pleased with his side's "good workout" as the Swans stepped up their pre-season preparations with a 1-1 draw with Reading at Wycombe's Adams Park.

Kyle Bartley equalised for the Swans in the second half after Nick Blackman's long-range screamer opened the scoring for the Royals.

Monk's side could have won the game late on as both Marvin Emnes and Jonjo Shelvey hit the woodwork, but the Swans boss was satisfied with his side's efforts as the countdown to the season opener continues.

"It was a good workout for us," said Monk. "Reading are a good team, and we've had some good pre-season games with them over the past few years.

"The minutes on the pitch is the most important thing for the players. Quite a few of the players got 90 minutes tonight, so it was a good workout.

"We've been working in a really good way during pre-season. Of course you'd like to win games, but it's more about the fitness side of it and getting match sharpness.

We had a lot of the ball tonight, which was good, and could have nicked it at the end, but it wasn't about the result.

As I said, it's about the players' fitness, and I think we'll get even sharper in the next two weeks ahead of the new season."

Swansea now make the trip to face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday afternoon (3pm).
