Past meetings | Swansea City v Millwall

22nd November
First team

As Swansea City get set to welcome Millwall to the Liberty Stadium for a Championship meeting on Saturday afternoon, we take a look back at some previous encounters with this weekend’s visitors.

Here we recall past meetings in the Football League Trophy, League One and the League and FA Cups.

Swansea 3 - 2 Millwall

Football League Trophy - September 4, 2007

Paul Anderson and Jason Scotland found the net as the Swans came from behind to progress in the Football League Trophy in 2007.

Anderson had put the holders ahead on 16 minutes when he found himself on the end of a cross from wide man Tom Butler, slotting home from six yards.

However celebrations were short lived at the Liberty Stadium, with Lions forward Ben May catching the Swans on the counter to draw level less than five minutes later.

Level at half-time, Millwall soon found themselves ahead through Jay Simpson who slotted past Dorus de Vries in the Swansea goal from a tight angle.

But, on an entertaining evening in South Wales, it was Scotland who would score next, equalising with his fifth goal in seven games for the Swans shortly after the hour mark.

And the hosts sealed the win when Millwall defender Zak Whitbread deflected a Darryl Duffy cross into his own net.

It soon got worse for the visitors as Jamie O’Hara saw red following a foul on Anderson as they ended the contest with 10 men.

Swansea 2 - 0 Millwall

League One - October 11, 2006

Dennis Lawrence and Leon Britton were both on the scoresheet at the Liberty Stadium as the Swans moved up to fifth position in League One.

Towering centre-back Lawrence opened the scoring on 17 minutes, heading home from close range to give Kenny Jackett’s side a 1-0 lead and register his first goal for the club.

The Swans doubled their lead after half-time when Rory Fallon’s drilled effort fell to the feet of midfielder Britton, who stroked the ball into the net.

Millwall threatened to get a goal back late on as Danny Haynes’ volley rattled Willy Gueret’s crossbar, before Lee Trundle scuppered the chance to score his third in as many games by missing a penalty late on.

Swansea 2 - 0 Millwall

League Cup - August 11, 1999

Roger Freestone saved a penalty as Swansea put themselves on course to advance in the League Cup with Steve Watkin and Jason Price netting at The Vetch.

In a tense first half, Watkin opened the scoring just seconds before the break while Price doubled the Swans’ advantage early in the second-half.

The visitors pushed to get back into the game and might have done so if not for Freestone, who made a superb penalty save to keep his and Swansea’s clean sheet intact.

The sides would play out a 1-1 draw at The Den as the Swans reached the next round.

Swansea 3 - 0 Millwall

FA Cup - November 13, 1998

The Swans secured progression into the second-round FA Cup for the first time in four years with goals from Jason Price, Martin Thomas and Julian Alsop.

Price opened the scoring inside five minutes for the home side before Thomas made it 2-0 just 20 minutes later, sending the Swans in at half-time with a firm hold of the game.

Despite an impressive performance from the home side it was Millwall goalkeeper Nigel Spink who received many of the plaudits, saving well on multiple occasions to prevent an even heavier defeat for the London side.

The Swans did eventually get their third however, with Alsop rounding off an emphatic victory against higher-league opposition with a goal in added time.
