Preview: Liverpool v Swans

26th December
First team

Swansea City will be looking to replicate last season’s historic win at Anfield when they take on Liverpool this evening (5.30pm).

The Swans memorably upset the odds as they beat Jurgen Klopp’s team 3-2 on their own patch last January.

Few gave the visitors a chance of getting anything that day, for they were bottom of the table and Liverpool were unbeaten at home in a year.

But having caused a famous shock then, the Swans are looking for more of the same today under caretaker boss Leon Britton.

The Swans have a decent record on Boxing Day in the Premier League era, although they have not won away from home on December 26 since a 3-1 League One success at Crewe in 2006.

Liverpool will be in confident mood as they get set to host the Swans, for they are yet to lose at home all season.

Team news

Wilfried Bony has been ruled out of today’s fixture due to a hamstring injury, while Ki Sung-Yueng has a calf problem.

The Swans also have concerns over Leroy Fer (back), Kyle Naughton (groin) and Roque Mesa (knee).

Liverpool defenders Joel Matip and Alberto Moreno are likely to miss out while Daniel Sturridge is also a doubt. Skipper Jordan Henderson is sidelined after injuring his hamstring in last Friday's 3-3 draw with Arsenal.

What they said

Leon Britton: “I have experienced going to Anfield as a player and Liverpool are always difficult to play against there. It will be a big test for us, but the players have got to relish that challenge.”

Angel Rangel: “We all tried to give Leon as much effort as we could against Palace. It is the least you can give to a man who has given everything to this football club. I think we’re going to fight for him."

Jurgen Klopp: "I don't really remember the game from last year, to be honest. I remember that we lost it. But that's not the plan!"
