Preview | Swansea City v Cardiff City

17th October
First team
Stadium - Stoke City

Swansea City will look to claim the early bragging rights in the south Wales derby when they host Cardiff City this afternoon (12pm).

Both teams go into the game locked on 11 points, though it's Russell Martin's team who sit a position due to goal difference.

The Swans have lost just once in their last six games during the period of games inbetween the previous two international breaks, and Martin has been encouraged by the progress his side have made in terms of performances during that time.

Cardiff, meanwhile, have lost five of their last six games in that same period, and have scored once in their last five league matches.

However, with form rarely a factor in these derby matches, it looks set to be an intriguing battle once again between the sides.

Team news

Russell Martin has a full squad to choose from for the first time since he was appointed as head coach.

He welcomes back Ryan Bennett, Olivier Ntcham and Michael Obafemi from injuries, while Ethan Laird and Ryan Manning are both available after overcoming knocks that prevented them from being involved in international duty.

Pre-match views

Russell Martin: "They know what it means, we’ve spoken a lot about it. The game is worth three points in the league, but for supporters, players and staff it’s worth so much more.

"I’m really looking forward to the game and seeing the stadium full. Derbies don’t have the same edge without supporters, and everyone can’t wait to hearing the Jack Army roar.

Mick McCarthy: "It’s difficult. It’s the game that creates that feeling inside you. It gets you going and gets you at it. The noise, the atmosphere that inspires people.

"I’m hardly the one to be saying to anyone to be calm, because you actually want that passion and people to be caring and putting in tackles. You just hope it’s not overzealous."

Remember the last time?

Despite having a chance to make history and become the first club to complete a derby derby, the Swans were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline as Aden Flint's early effort proved the difference in SA1.

Earlier in the season, a Jamal Lowe double - including a sublime solo effort - sealed a 2-0 victory for the Swans at the Cardiff City Stadium.
