Swansea City welcome Sheffield United to the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday afternoon for their first Championship home game of the season (3pm).

Vitor Matos’ side will be looking to build on last weekend’s impressive 2-1 comeback victory over Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium, with the Swans aiming to start a season with back-to-back league wins for the first time since 2018.

Standing in their way are a Sheffield United side who have made a solid start to the campaign. The Blades opened their Championship season with a hard-fought goalless draw against Birmingham City, having secured their place in the second round of the Carabao Cup with victory over Mansfield Town.

Ross Stewart

New signing Ross Stewart will be available for selection for Saturday’s Championship clash with Sheffield United.

The striker, who joined the club earlier this month, has been working towards full fitness after featuring for Scotland at the World Cup and is now in line to potentially make his Swans debut.

Matos also confirmed Gonçalo Franco is recovering well from the ankle injury he sustained in pre-season, with the Portuguese midfielder now undertaking individual work on the training pitch.

Cameron Burgess, however, remains a long-term absentee for the Swans following the Achilles injury he sustained against Birmingham City.

Vitor Matos: “It’s not about [starting with two wins], it’s about being competitive and that’s what we want.

“Now we have Sheffield United, which is a really good team. Chris is a really experienced manager and knows the league really well.

“They are really competitive and they have a clear plan of what to do on the pitch, so we count on a difficult game.

“We know that we will have to handle the aggressiveness, the verticality and the quick attacks. That’s something that we need to be aware of, and we need to find a way as well to impose our game. That’s what we will try to do.”

Chris Wilder:  “Swansea got off to a great start, and they have their own way of playing, they can hurt you, but they can be hurt too.

"We've built through pre-season defensively and had two competitive clean sheets, but we've got to be better at the top of the pitch.

"Swansea are and have been for a long time excellent on the ball and can open anyone up. Last season (at Bramall Lane) was a great example, where we should have killed the game at 3-1, but we didn't and they exposed our defensive frailties."

Referee Tom Neild

Tom Nield will be the man in charge Swansea City take on the Blades.

A trained nurse who worked extra shifts during the Covid-19 pandemic, Nield has been officiating in the EFL since 2017 and took charge of his first Championship fixture during the 2022-23 season.

Nield oversaw three Swansea fixtures last season, including away trips to West Bromwich Albion and Wrexham, as well as the Swans’ home draw with Birmingham City back in January.

He will be assisted by Callum Gough and Michael Webb, while Leigh Doughty will serve as the fourth official.

Stephen Dobbie Sheffield United 2011

Swansea signed off the 2010-11 Championship campaign in style, sweeping aside a relegated Sheffield United side to move into third place and set up a play-off semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

Stephen Dobbie opened the scoring shortly before half-time with a curling free-kick, before the Blades were reduced to 10 men when Shane Lowry was dismissed for handling Scott Sinclair’s goal-bound effort.

Sinclair made no mistake from the resulting penalty, taking his tally for the season to 24 goals and putting the Swans firmly in control.

Dobbie added his second five minutes later with a powerful strike from the edge of the area, before Leon Britton completed the rout with a fine half-volley from 25 yards against his former club.

The emphatic win provided the perfect platform for Brendan Rodgers’ side as they embarked on their memorable play-off campaign, which ultimately ended with promotion to the Premier League.

Prime Numbers

1 - Swansea have taken just one victory from their last eight league encounters with Sheffield United, drawing two and losing five. That sole win came at home last season, when the Swans edged out the Blades 1-0.

2 - The Swans have started their last two league campaigns with victory in their opening home fixture, including last season's 1-0 success against Sheffield United. Swansea have not recorded three consecutive opening home wins since a five-game run between 1995 and 1999.

3 - Sheffield United were unable to beat Swansea in either league meeting last season, with one draw and one defeat. The Blades have not failed to win against the Swans in three successive league games across consecutive seasons since the 1956-57 and 1957-58 campaigns.

14 - Sheffield United have struggled to get off the mark in their first away league fixture, winning just once in their last 14 campaigns. Their only success during that run came in 2024-25, when they defeated Preston North End 2-0.
