Andy Fisher made the crucial shootout save and Swansea City were flawless from the spot as they beat Plymouth Argyle on penalties to advance in the Carabao Cup.

The Swans scored all five of their spot-kicks after the tie had ended 1-1, with Fisher denying former Swan Matthew Sorinola to secure a 5-3 shootout win and a place in the third-round draw.

The hosts had led on the night thanks to to Zan Vipotnik's thunderbolt from distance but they could not build on that advantage and Brendan Wiredu levelled matters just before the interval.

There were opportunities at either end during the second half, but it ended in penalties and the Swans progressed.

There was also the unwelcome sight for head coach Alan Sheehan of seeing Jisung Eom and Kaelan Casey forced off with injuries.

The Swans had shown eight changes from the draw with Watford as Marko Stamenic was handed his full debut, with Andy Fisher, Sam Parker, Casey, Jay Fulton, Melker Widell, Zeidane Inoussa and Vipotnik coming into the team.

The Swans should have led inside 90 seconds, Josh Tymon breaking clear and playing Melker Widell in on goal, but keeper Luca Ashby-Hammond made a sharp low save to parry the Swede’s effort.

Plymouth responded well, Bim Pepple heading wide from a Tegan Finn cross a few moments later and it later required a strong block from Casey after Bradley Ibrahim had been picked out by Matthew Sorinola’s cutback.

Tymon fired an effort narrowly over the bar after neat work by Inoussa and Jisung Eom around the edge of the Plymouth penalty area.

But the Swans did open the scoring with a wonder strike from Vipotnik.

The Slovenian picked up the ball 25 yards from goal and unleashed a rocket of a drive that flashed beyond Ashby-Hammond to find the net via the underside of the crossbar.

The Swans threatened to quickly add to their tally, enjoying extended periods in the Plymouth half but just not being able to find the final ball.

Vipotnik nearly had a second when he picked off a loose backpass but the keeper scrambled to get back and block his effort on goal.

Captain on the night Burgess powered a header wide from the resulting corner, but it was Plymouth who hit back in first-half stoppage time when Wiredu got away from his marker from a deep free-kick to the far post and guided a header into the bottom corner.

The hosts were back on the front foot early in the second half, Inoussa just unable to bring down a raking pass dropping over Sorinola’s head.

Eom had an effort blocked after a cross had ricocheted to him off a defender but that proved his last involvement as he was forced off by injury, with Josh Key taking his place.

Ethan Galbraith, Yalcouye and Ben Cabango were also summoned from the bench but the next chance went to the visitors, with Joe Hatch drilling the ball over from the edge of the box.

Casey then suffered an injury of his own, with the Swans being forced into a reshuffle as Liam Cullen arrived to replace him as the final 20 minutes approached.

Fisher made a good stop low to his left to prevent Pepple putting Argyle ahead after the forward had been slipped through on goal.

Lung-bursting runs from Parker and Key setting up position for Yalcouye to send a diving header wide, while Fisher was alert again as he pushed away a Lorent Tolaj effort and then bravely swooped at the feet of an oncoming attacker.

Cullen spooned a right-footed effort over the bar after excellent work from Tymon down the left, before Parker was denied by a superb last-ditch tackle in the final seconds as the tie went to penalties.

Vipotnik, Galbraith, Cullen, Cabango and Widell all scored from the spot with Fisher making the all-important save from Sorinola.
