Report | Swansea City 4 Sheffield Wednesday 0
A Zan Vipotnik brace helped Swansea City extend their unbeaten home record to seven games with a routine victory over Sheffield Wednesday.
Goncalo Franco opened the scoring when he turned the ball home at the end of a flowing Swansea attack.
That goal separated the sides at the break and Vipotnik made sure of the points with a stunning freekick with 20 minutes remaining, and quickly took his tally for the season to 17 goals with a calm finish from Ronald's pull-back.
Malick Yalcouye applied the finishing touch when he netted his first Swansea goal late on to make this a biggest win of the season for the home side.
The result means the Swans move to within five points of the top six and have taken 19 points from the last 21 available in SA1. They also have eight wins from their last 13 league games, with this being a ninth clean sheet of the campaign.
The margin of victory could have been greater with Ronald going close and Liam Cullen hitting the bar, but the Swans got the job done with a professional performance that keeps them heading in the right direction.
Vitor Matos handed a first start to Gustavo Nunes as Ethan Galbraith and Cullen came back into the starting line-up, while new signing Leo Walta was among the substitutes.
There were some bright early forays from the Swans, with Ronald and Nunes making headway into the final third.
Josh Tymon had a low strike from distance saved by Murphy Cooper, while Marko Stamenic dragged an effort wide from a similar position.
And the hosts took the lead with a lovely flowing team move.
Ronald, Cullen, Nunes and Tymon were all involved, with the latter’s drive cross given Franco the easiest of finishes from close range.
Another fine move saw Gabriel Otegbayo make a hurried but important clearance after Galbraith had exchanged passes with Ronald and delivered a threatening ball into the six-yard box.
Tymon then ruffled the side-netting with a low drive from a half-cleared corner as Swansea looked to extend their advantage.
A lovely pass from Galbraith then sent Ronald into space, the Brazilian cutting infield before firing high and wide of the target.
Cullen then clipped the crossbar with an excellent improvised finish after a clever Tymon delivery had caught Wednesday napping at a free-kick as the lead remained at a solitary goal at the interval.
Nunes had a shot blocked early in the second half, before Zan Vipotnik planted a header just wide of the post from another excellent Tymon set-piece delivery.
Nunes was denied again after a lovely move saw Ronald cutback for his fellow Brazilian, but Liam Palmer made an excellent block for the visitors.
The Swans had complete control of the contest, but without the second goal the game remained in the balance.
However, they did manage to extend their lead when a rapid counter-attack ended with Malick Yalcouye being fouled on the edge of the penalty area.
Vipotnik took on the responsibility and fired a thunderbolt of a free-kick high past a startled Cooper for his 16th goal of the campaign.
Ronald fizzed a strike wide as Swansea looked to add to their tally, shortly after Walta had come on for his debut as a substitute, before Vipotnik put the result beyond any doubt.
Swansea attacked swiftly to get Ronald into space, the winger found the Slovenian striker, who took a touch to steady himself before sending a low strike into the net.
Yalcouye added the fourth late on as he skipped into the area and found the far corner.
