Report | Swansea City U18s 2 Charlton Athletic U18s 4

26th February
Iwan Morgan

Swansea City Under-18s suffered their first defeat of 2022 as Professional Development League leaders Charlton Athletic claimed victory at Landore.

Two goals from Iwan Morgan were nullified by two goals from Miles Leaburn, while Mack Reilly and Ryan Huke also netted for the visitors.

The Addicks not only sit top of the Professional Development League, but are also the highest goalscorers by 17 goals across the entire league, as well as touting the best defensive record in the south group.

The leading goal scorers took almost no time in adding another to their impressive tally, Leaburn turning in the box and finishing after just four minutes.

The Swans grew into the game following the opening goal, Geoff Bony finding Morgan in the box, but the forward couldn’t turn his effort on target.

Charlton doubled the lead somewhat against the run of play, Huke’s effort from the edge of the box taking a big deflection and wrong footing Tyler Evans in the Swansea goal.

The visitors soon made it three, Reilly arriving into the box late from a corner and powering home a volley.

The Swans players felt that Addicks keeper Ahmed Kone should have been shown a red card 27 minutes in, claiming he handled the ball outside the box as Morgan broke through, but the referee ruled the ball hit the shot stopper’s chest.

But the Swans would find a breakthrough soon after, Kyrell Wilson’s cross finding Morgan, who chested the ball down well before a neat finish from close range.

The three-goal lead of the visitors was soon restored however, Leaburn adding a second of the afternoon from Oliver Hobden’s low cross.

Wilson had the chance to pull one back before the break, his great pressing winning him the ball back high in the Charlton half, but his finish was fired  over the crossbar.

Swansea came out the blocks strong in the second half, with Morgan and Corey Hurford both carving chances for themselves within the first five minutes.

Wilson once again won the ball high up the pitch and played across to Morgan, but his effort was just wide of the post.

Zane Myers, who returned to the starting eleven for the first time since December, flashed a cross through the Charlton box, but a stretching Morgan couldn’t get on the end of it.

But Morgan would finally get his second of the afternoon, capitalising on a poor clearance from the goalkeeper and finishing well to make it 4-2.

Karey Anderson had the chance to put the game to bed after Leaburn slid the ball across the box to him, but Evans pulled out a fantastic save to keep the Addicks lead down to two.

And, despite the Swans strong second-half performance, coach Darren Davies saw his side suffer their first defeat in 2022.
