Swansea City Under-21s claimed a dominant 5-1 victory over their Sheffield Wednesday counterparts at the Joma High Performance Centre on Monday afternoon.

The Swans were ahead at the break through a Morgan Bates header, and four more goals followed in the second period thanks to Josh Pescatore, Thomas Woodward (2) and Dan Watts.

Sheffield Wednesday pulled a goal back with three minutes left on the clock as Devlan Moses denied the Swans a clean sheet with a calm finish from inside the box, but it was little more than a consolation for the visitors.

There was just the one change to the Swans side that drew with Cardiff City last time out. Billy Clarke coming in for Blair McKenzie at the back.

The opening 10 minutes were an even affair, with neither side testing the respective keepers, but Swansea skipper Dan Watts made a crucial block to prevent a Zain Silcott-Duberry opener as the game began to open up.

A quick counter from the Owls followed as Devlan Moses' solo run and effort was cut out by Joe Collins.

The Swans looked to respond following a period of control from the visitors. Iestyn Jones got the better of his man before teeing up Pescatore. The latter sent a low ball into the path of Woodward, but the midfielder struck the side-netting.

Moments later, Clarke's delivery found the head Morgan Bates, but the striker directed his header narrowly over the cross bar.

Down the other end, Favour Onukwuli fashioned a low effort that he sent wide of the target, before Clarke cleared a Duberry strike off the line.

But the Swans broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, and it was Bates who nodded home his 19th goal of the season after yet another assist from Pescatore, who racked up his 13th of the campaign.

The Swans were on the offensive again from the start of the second half, and were rewarded with a second goal of the afternoon as Pescatore's effort from the edge of the area beat the outstretched hands of Logan Stretch.

Woodward and Watts looked to add to the Swansea tally immediately after, with both of their low efforts from distance gathered in by Stretch.

With 20 minutes remaining Woodward would find the net for the Swans' third goal. Substitute Milo Robinson set up the midfielder who made no mistake to find the far corner from a tight angle.

The goals came thick and fast for the Swans, skipper Watts got himself on the scoresheet for his second goal in as many games. The midfielder found Woodward in the box, and a return pass allowed Watts to steer the ball into the bottom corner.

A 17th goal of the season soon came for Woodward after a skilful turn in the box allowed the 19-year-old to smash home in style with five minutes remaining.

Moses pulled a goal back for the Owls, but it was only a consolation, although the hosts would have been disappointed not to secure a clean sheet.
