Report | Swansea City U23s 1 Millwall U23s 2

1st February
Cameron Congreve

Swansea City Under-23s were dealt their first loss in five matches as they suffered defeat against at Millwall at Landore in Professional Development League South.

Swansea fell behind midway through the first half after Sean O’Brien’s clinical free kick, however, Cameron Congreve found an equaliser for the hosts with a powerful shot.

However, Millwall found another way through just seconds before the half-time whistle was blown with Tyrese Briscoe making the most of a misplaced pass to score what ultimately proved to be the decisive goal.

The Swans controlled the early stages and got the first sight on goal, but Congreve’s strike from the edge of the penalty area curled narrowly wide of the far post.

Congreve tried his luck again soon after, however, this time from a free kick which he could only find the side-netting.

Despite Swansea having most of the possession it was Millwall who found the back of the net courtesy of an O’Brien set piece into the bottom left corner and out of the reach of the trialist in the home goal.

The Lions looked to extend their advantage as Jayden Davis threatened the Swansea goal with approaching 30 minutes played, but the Swans keeper reacted quickly to parry it away to safety.

The Swans came agonisingly close to equalising after Lincoln Mcfayden played in a dangerous low cross into the box, but Jaden Forrester was unable to get the vital touch.

Following those chances, Congreve smashed home the leveller finding the top-right corner after he manufactured a yard of space on the edge of the box.

But, on the stroke of half-time, Millwall were back in front after Briscoe gathered a loose back pass, and he made no mistake with the finish.

The Swans looked to get back on terms as soon as possible after the resumption and nearly found it through Millwall's Chinwike Okoli, after he nearly turned McFayden’s cross into his own net with Lions keeper Jordan Gilmore tipping the ball to safety.

Millwall came close to extending their advantage with 10 minutes left after a good cross to the front post from George Walker was there to be attacked, but Ben Erickson was able to tidy up the situation.

The in-form Forrester nearly made it six goals in as many games but his strike on the rise was pulled inches wide of the mark as Kris O'Leary's side could not quite find the finishing touch to secure a point.
