Report | Wrexham Women 1 Swansea City Women 2
Swansea City Women rounded off their Genero Adran Premier campaign with a superb victory champions Wrexham at The Rock.
First-half goals from Ellie Lake and Aimee Deacon proved enough for the Swans, with Katie Barker pulling one back just past the hour mark, as Swansea secured their first league win in five matches and their first victory over Wrexham this season.
The result will provide a major momentum boost for Yzzy Taylor’s side as they look to build ahead of their Bute Energy Welsh Cup final against Cardiff City at Rodney Parade in two weeks’ time.
The Swans made a bright start and took the lead after just six minutes when Lake’s delivery into the box looped over Liz Craven and dropped under the crossbar.
Swansea continued to threaten, with Maisie Miller and Deacon linking up well down the left, while Deacon also tested Craven from distance, but her low strike was comfortably gathered by the Wrexham goalkeeper.
Wrexham’s first real opportunity came through league top scorer Barker, who drove into the box from the right, but Amelia Forkings produced an excellent save to deny her.
The visitors thought they had doubled their lead when Stacey John raced onto a long ball and finished well, but the flag was raised for offside.
Chloe Chivers then went close with a volley from the edge of the area following a cleared cross, but her strike narrowly evaded the target.
Swansea did manage to find a second just before the break. A cross from Chivers found Deacon, who showed great composure to lift the ball over Craven and into the net.
Swansea carried that momentum into the second half, with Chivers forcing another save from Craven after creating space for a long-range effort.
However, Wrexham grew into the game and reduced the deficit just after the hour mark when Hannah Snape’s through ball was raced onto by Katie Barker, who converted from close range.
The hosts pushed for an equaliser, but Forkings was in inspired form, producing a number of key saves, including a crucial stop to deny Barker in a one-on-one situation.
Late pressure from Wrexham saw Josie Smith go close, only for Forkings to make a superb reaction save before Lake cleared the rebound off the line to preserve the Swans’ lead.
It proved enough as Swansea held firm to secure all three points and end their league campaign on a high, returning to south Wales with a deserved victory.
