Richards: We've been good value

Gary Richards believes Swansea City Under-23s have had good value from their opening four games in this season’s Premier League Cup following their 2-0 victory over Oxford United on Saturday.

The young Swans bounced back from a disappointing 3-0 by Leicester on Monday, as they moved top of Group E with two games remaining.

Jordon Garrick and Joel Asoro were on target for the development and Richards was pleased by the impact of his forwards.

“We’re very pleased with the result,” the under-23s coach said. “I think we needed a win today and it was nice to bounce back from a disappointing performance on Monday.

“With two wins and a home draw, we’ve had good value from our opening four games.

“We looked at our best when we moved the ball quickly and simply and, when we did, opportunities came from it.

“It was good to see our forwards getting on the scoresheet and creating more chances towards the end of the game. That was very pleasing to see.”

Richards also praised the performances of Jack Withers and Cameron Berry – both of whom made their debuts for the under-23s after missing the start of the season through injury.

“Both players have done well to come back from nasty injuries,” he added. “So, I’m delighted to see them back on the pitch and getting minutes today.

“I’m sure they will only benefit from it.”

The Swans’ group campaign concludes with two away trips to Wolves and Hull City in February.

Richards knows his players must be on top of their game in both instances, but is encouraged by the fact that they fate is now in their own hands.

“At least we’re in a position now where we’re in control,” he concluded.

“We know how difficult our final two games are going to be.

“Both are away from home so we know we’ll have to perform well, but today’s win has set us up nicely.”
