Ferrie Bodde is pictured celebrating his wonder goal against Preston North End on September 30, 2008.

The Swans won 2-0 at Deepdale with Jordi Gomez also on target from the penalty spot.

Roberto Martinez’s side were adapting to life in the Championship following their League One title-winning campaign the previous year.

But they arrived at Deepdale aiming to bounce from a comprehensive 4-0 defeat at the hands of Reading just three days previously.

Preston were also looking to respond after losing their two most recent matches, against Wolves and Burnley.

Bodde was known for his ability to strike the ball from distance, but few saw his 19th-minute effort at Lancashire coming.

After picking up the ball just inside Preston’s half, the mercurial Dutchman took a touch and let fly with a stunning effort that left home keeper Andy Lonergan clutching at thin air as it sailed into the back of the net.

The Swans made the points safe 10 minutes from time, when Gomez slotted home from the spot after being brought down by Jay McEveley.

But all the talk afterwards was of Bodde's extraordinary goal.
