Stephen Welsh | We wanted more from the performance and result
Defender Stephen Welsh was left disappointed after Swansea City were held to a goalless draw by Sheffield United at the Swansea.com Stadium.
The Swans dominated possession for large spells and created a number of promising opportunities, but were unable to find a way through the Blades defence.
Joseph Opoku, Moussa Yeo and Elijah Just were among those to have sights of goal as Swansea had to settle for a point, while extending their unbeaten start to the season.
But Welsh was disappointed that the Swans could not make more of their chances count.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t win the game,” he said.
“We didn’t create enough chances to get over the line, but I thought our game in general was OK.
“I thought we controlled parts of the game and then they did, which was disappointing for us.
“We wanted to make this place a tough place to come and they probably found it tough, but we want to do it for longer periods in games.
“I’m disappointed not to win the game, but if you’re not going to win it, then don’t lose it.”
The Swans recorded their first clean sheet of the season, with Welsh pleased with the defensive display.
“A clean sheet for the defenders and the goalkeeper is always a positive,” he added.
“We take pride in not conceding. I think they only had a couple of chances, which is OK.
“I think the whole team defended well as a unit, but going forward we need to improve.
“Our play getting into the final third is good, but maybe that final cross or final pass is what’s needed. We should have tested their goalkeeper a lot more today.”
Welsh made his second appearance for the club since joining Swansea this summer and has enjoyed settling into his new surroundings.
The Swans head to Derby next weekend, with the defender admitting that recovery and further improvement will be key ahead of the trip to the Midlands.
“I’ve enjoyed the experience so far. There’s probably no surprise in terms of how teams play and set up," he continued.
“I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s about full focus on the derby now. We’re heading to Derby next weekend, so it’s going to be a tough game and hopefully we can go and put in a good performance.
“It’s just about recovery now. We know it’s going to be a tough game against them, as they all are in this division.”
