Swansea City

25th April

Today we bring you the latest edition of our weekly 'blast from the past' feature, where we look back at memorable clash between the Swans and an upcoming opponent.

On Saturday, Garry Monk's side welcome Aston Villa to the Liberty, aiming for another three points in their bid to secure top-flight safety.

This week, we go back to December, 1981, where the Swans host Villa at the Vetch Field, knowing that a win would take them back to top spot over Christmas.

Swansea City Vs Aston Villa - Vetch Field - December 15, 1981

The Swans climbed back up to top spot of the old First Division with a well-earned 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Vetch Field.

Goals from Robbie James, either side of a Max Thompson own goal, helped the Swans secure maximum points over Villa.

The Swans took an early lead when James found the net in the 12th minute before they were pegged back just two minutes later when Thompson deflected the ball into his own net.

But the visitors' resurgence proved to be short-lived as James doubled his and Swansea's tally five minutes before the break, following a sustained spell of pressure from the Swans.

In Swansea's first season in the top flight, the important victory at the Vetch Field put the Swans back on top of the First Division over the Christmas period.
