Swansea City Under-23s EFL Trophy Newport County

27th July

Swansea City's development squad will face a Welsh derby against League Two side Newport County in their Southern group stage of the EFL Trophy.
The new-look competition, formerly known as the Football League Trophy, includes invited Category One Academy clubs to play alongside sides from League's One and Two.
The Swans Under-23 side, who were drawn in Group B, will also face play-off promoted League One side AFC Wimbledon and Plymouth Argyle from League Two, with fixtures set to take place in the weeks commencing August 29, October 3 and November 7.
Teams from each group will play each other once, either home or away. The top two sides from the group then qualify for the knockout stages of the competition, with the chance to play at Wembley Stadium in the final in early April.
Under-23s coach Gary Richards expressed his delight with the draw. "We are very excited to be playing in this competition this season," he said.
"Playing against Football League teams will only help our young players develop their football this season.
"We have drawn strong teams from the Football League and the fact we will play another Welsh side in the competition is excellent motivation."
Full details, including a date and venue for each game, will be confirmed at a later date on swanseacity.net.
