Substitute Kevin Nugent struck the winner in this penultimate game of the Division Three campaign.
The Swans had seen keeper Brian Murphy replaced by Roger Freestone after seven minutes, and then Lee Trundle was forced off with Nugent taking his place.
Paul Connor had given the Swans the lead after 50 minutes but Darlington levelled just past the hour via Danny Graham - a striker who would later join the club in the Premier League.
A 0-0 home draw with York ended the season, with the Swans finishing 10th - 15 points off the play-offs.

Joe Bradshaw left the Swans after being accepting the managerial role at Fulham.
Having moved to Swansea Town in 1919, Bradshaw spent seven years managing the club and led them to the Third Division South title in the 1924/25 season before moving to Fulham the following year.
