Head coach Vitor Matos praised his Swansea City side’s professional performance after they eased to a 4-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

The Swans recorded their biggest Championship win since April 2024, when they defeated Huddersfield by the same scoreline, and continued their impressive home form with a sixth three-point haul from the last seven games in SA1.

They did not have it all their own way against a stubborn Wednesday side, even after Goncalo Franco had finished off a flowing team move to open the scoring in the first half.

But Zan Vipitnik’s thunderous free-kick, quickly followed by a smart finish from a swift Swansea attack, put the result beyond doubt, before Malick Yalcouye rounded off the scoring by finding the far corner after cutting inside onto his left foot.

There was also a ninth clean sheet of the season for the hosts.

“It was a good performance on a day where we knew all the basic things we would need to do well,” said Matos.

“We delivered those things, we started the game with intensity, and that set the tone.

“We scored a brilliant goal that gave us the calm to control the game, and the second goal was important as was the clean sheet because we want to have this kind of mentality.

“We respect the opponent, and it was right to do that because Sheffield Wednesday put in a lot of effort and compete with everything they have.

“So we knew we had to do the right things and take our opportunities when we have them, we did that and that gave us the confidence to have control of the game.”

Matos was also delighted with the calibre of Swansea’s goals, and while Vipotnik’s rocket of a free quick took the headlines, he also served praise for the quality of the opening team goal.

“That first goal says a lot about how we want to play,” he added.

“It was massive, and it was great to see Franco scoring with great movement in the box.

“For Vipi, that free-kick just shows you what he can do and he can offer. Hopefully he can do a few more like that. I don’t think he was down to be a set-piece taker, but his confidence and conviction was great to see and it’s another way of scoring for him.”
