Vitor Matos | That win means a lot to the players and our fans
Head coach Vitor Matos was delighted for Swansea City’s players and fans after watching his side put their away-day frustrations behind them with a fine 2-0 victory at play-off chasing Watford.
After a goalless first half, Marko Stamenic opened the scoring when he arrived at the far post to turn in Zan Vipotnik’s header from a Josh Tymon corner.
Josh Key went on to seal the win with 10 minutes to go, finishing from close range after Stamenic had driven a low ball across the six-yard box.
It was no less than the Swans deserved for a determined, battling performance that saw them become just the second team to beat the Hornets at Vicarage Road since Javi Gracia returned to the Hertfordshire club in October.
After a tight first half, their confidence and control grew during the second half as they emerged with three points after the disappointments of playing well but not coming away with anything from games against the likes of Stoke, Coventry and Hull.
“We are really happy this time that we have got the points to go with the performance,” he said.
“I am pleased for the players, and especially the fans, they were massive all through the game.
“It’s important because we all had that feeling that the performances were pushing us in the right direction.
“We have been unlucky not to get more results and points, sometimes that has been about little details and other times about being efficient. Today, we had that.
“In the first half we needed to be compact, and stay in our own half, which is not normal for us and we did not have so much of the ball.
“But we were willing to suffer together and control the inside spaces and our box, and then that gave us the confidence for the second half.
“We were able to be more aggressive and have more control, and I am really happy for the boys because they deserve it.
“They are a really good team, with really good players, but we put in a good performance.”
