Swansea City Women’s head coach Yzzy Taylor has challenged her side to stick together and produce a strong response following a 6-0 defeat to rivals Cardiff City in the Genero Adran Trophy.

A brace from Fiona Barry, along with goals from Hannah Power, Kerry Walklett, Mackenzie Olden and an Eilish Mitchell own goal, saw the Bluebirds secure a place in the last four of the competition while inflicting a third derby defeat of the season on the Swans.

Swansea conceded two early goals but began to grow into the game as the half went on, only for a third strike in the closing minutes before the break to all but seal Cardiff’s win.

Cardiff continued to threaten in the second half, and were rewarded with another three goals to secure the victory.

Taylor admitted that, as good as Cardiff were, the timing of the goals left her side with too much to do in their attempts to force their way back into the tie.

“This was tough for us all,” she said.

“We have to credit Cardiff for how they approached the game. We weren’t at our best and were punished for it, but we have to make sure that we respond positively over the next few weeks.

“The timing of the goals in the first half was tough as going down so early on you are always climbing an uphill battle but I felt that we were able to digest the first half at half-time.

“We then wanted a response in the second half which I feel in moments we did give. To concede again early in the second half was difficult but we will learn from it.

“Next week is extremely important for us and we will respond positively and look forward to an opportunity to right our wrongs from this game.

“It is another cup competition that we want to go as far as possible in, so we will lick our wounds this week and look for a reaction next Sunday.”
