Anthony Wright | A positive way to end the campaign
Coach Anthony Wright was pleased to round off the regular Professional Development League campaign with a draw as a young Swansea City Under-21s side claimed a point away to Sheffield United.
In similar fashion to Sunday's outing at Brentford, goals for both sides came early with Sheffield's Archie Crainie opening the scoring before midfielder Alfie Jones struck home the equaliser moments later.
Billy Clarke had the visitors ahead just before the break, and as the Swans were looking on course to end their league campaign with three points, Harry McGlinchey netted from a free-kick in the closing stages for the hosts as it ended 2-2.
But it was a strong showing from a young Swansea City side, which only featured three regular Under-21s' players with two debut goals for two scholars.
"It’s a brilliant way to sign the season off, especially with such a young and inexperienced group," said Wright.
"After Sunday against Brentford, we made the decision to leave behind the players who played 75-plus minutes for recovery, which gave the under-18s lads an opportunity to play. To come here against a strong Sheffield side and perform like that, I thought they were excellent.
"In the first half, we really controlled the game. Our possession was good, we were brave on the ball, and our decision-making was exactly what we’ve been asking for.
"We fully deserved to be 2–1 up at half-time. I’m really pleased for Alfie Jones getting his first under-21s' goal as a first-year scholar, and Billy Clarke as well - another big moment for him with his first at this level.
"The second half was a completely different kind of test. It became more of a physical, territorial game, and we had to show resilience and character. That’s always a concern with such a young side all playing together, but I thought the players stood up to it really well.
"A special mention for Callum Deacon. We had to play him out of position, but he put in a really strong performance and did exactly what the team needed.
"Overall, it’s been a really positive three days in terms of performances. Now it’s about carrying that momentum into the play-off game against Newcastle on Monday.”
