On this day: Dorus breaks a record

Swansea City gave their Championship play-off bid a boost by beating Scunthorpe United on this day in 2010.

Paulo Sousa’s side had enjoyed a positive season despite the fact that they had scored fewer goals than any other second-tier team.

What success they had was built on their defence, as highlighted in their 3-0 win over Scunthorpe.

Dorus de Vries’s clean sheet was his 23rd of the season, a tally which saw him break the club record previously held by Roger Freestone.

And though they struggled for firepower throughout the 2009-10 campaign, the Swans had too much for lowly Scunthorpe.

On-loan Burnley defender David Edgar put Sousa’s men ahead when he netted from close range on 27 minutes, then Ashley Williams doubled the advantage early in the second period.

Shefki Kuqi rounded off the scoring as the Swans sealed a first win in seven games.

The victory left them fifth in the table, but they would end up missing out on the play-offs on the final day of the season.
