On this day in 2010, Scott Sinclair’s hat-trick inspired Swansea City to a 3-1 victory over Peterborough in the League Cup.

The Swans booked their place in the last 16 of the competition for just the second time in 33 years, while ending Posh’s 100 per cent home record at the start of the season.

Having gone close moments earlier, Sinclair took just five minutes to find the net for the third match running – weaving through the Peterborough defence before seeing his shot deflect home via Gabriel Zakuani and goalkeeper Joe Lewis.

The lead lasted for less than two minutes when Charlie Lee’s cross found Craig Mackail-Smith, who made no mistake from close range, but the Swans regained the initiative just before half-time.

This time, David Cotterill turned provider with a precise through ball for Sinclair to apply the finishing touches, and the 21-year-old completed his hat-trick 12 minutes from time when he slid home following a clever back-heel from Stephen Dobbie.

The Swans matched their best-ever performance in the League Cup by reaching the last 16, where they were narrowly beaten 2-0 by Premier League side Wigan.
