On this day: Swans sink Magpies

Goals from Herbie Williams and David Gwyther helped the bottom-of-the-table Swans to a 3-0 win over Notts County in the Third Division at Vetch Field on this day in 1972.

The game was Harry Gregg’s first in charge following the departure of Roy Bentley, and the Swans began life under their new manager in style.

Williams scored his first goal inside 10 minutes before finding the net again five minutes later.

Gwyther then sealed the victory as he made it 3-0 on the verge of half-time.

The season would end in disappointment, though, as the Swans dropped into the fourth tier.
