On This Day: Trophy triumph

​​​​​​​Swansea City progressed to the second round of the Football League Trophy with a 3-1 victory over Colchester United at Vetch Field on this day in 1999.

Tommy Mutton scored his first goal for the Swans in the 16th minute before setting up Martin Thomas to double the home side’s advantage just three minutes later.

Colchester’s Jamie Moralee reduced the deficit with a second-half goal, but Steve Watkin’s emergence from the bench ended United’s challenge as he scored Swansea’s third in the 75th minute.

John Hollins’ side were beaten in the second round of the Football League Trophy, going down 2-0 against Exeter City.

The Swans gained promotion to the Second Division after being crowned champions of the Third Division at the end of the 1999-2000 season.
