'Joe is A1 - we are proud'

Graham Potter reckons Joe Rodon’s promotion to the senior Wales squad is a feather in the cap for Swansea City.

Rodon will join up with Ryan Giggs’s senior squad for their games against Spain and the Republic of Ireland.

The defender will hope to win his first senior cap having been drafted in from the under-21s following the withdrawal of Newcastle’s Paul Dummett.

The international chance is the latest step forward for Rodon, who has burst on to the first-team scene at the Liberty this season.

And Potter said: “We are really proud of Joe. He has produced a consistent level of performance and the more he plays I think the better he will get.

“It’s a great achievement for him and it just shows that in football, things can happen very quickly.

“This should give everybody at the football club some encouragement and congratulations to everyone at the academy for the part they have played in Joe’s development.”

Wales play Spain at the Principality Stadium next Thursday before taking on the Irish in a Nations League game a week on Monday.

And Potter reckons Rodon will cope with the step up to senior international football.

“Going away with Wales will be a great experience for him,” he added.

“You can say what you like about him as a footballer, but as a lad he is A1 – he is top. I am really pleased for him.”
