Lawrence Vigouroux | We've put good foundations in place, but we can't let up
Lawrence Vigouroux believes Swansea City have put strong foundations in place over the last few months, but insists that work must not stop over the final weeks of the season.
The goalkeeper has enjoyed another excellent campaign for the Swans, with 11 clean sheets to his name to add to his 14 from last term.
His form has seen him win his first senior caps for Chile, and he has been part of a Swansea side averaging 1.5 points per game since the appointment of Vitor Matos in late November.
Vigouroux believes the signs are clear that the Swans are heading in the right direction, with a settled group growing in confidence and understanding with each other.
The draw with promotion-hunting Middlesbrough on Easter Monday underlined the point and the Swans now head to the east Midlands to take on a Leicester City side battling to avoid the drop.
So, while Matos’ side are not in the promotion picture, Vigouroux knows from previous experience in his career how important these spells in seasons can prove for teams looking to aim high during the following campaign.
“It is so important when you are able to work consistently as a group and keep building and trying to improve,” he said.
“You understand each other better, you know everyone’s strengths and weaknesses, and the work you do in these periods or in these seasons can absolutely be the building blocks for something better.
“I often talk about it, but I had it in my time at Leyton Orient. We had a manager leave halfway through the season, a new manager came in and we did really well over most of the remainder of that season.
“Then, when it came to the following season, we went on and won the league. Now, I’m not saying we are going to do the same, what I am saying is that the time we had together as a group with the manager, working together, improving and understanding what we were working to become made a really positive difference.
“It meant we had strong foundations going into that summer, we did not need wholesale changes, it was just about focusing on improving key areas and fine-tuning.
“What is to say that can’t happen here? We have a group that knows each other well, that knows each other’s strengths and weaknesses inside out, and we know each other as people to get as much as we can out of each other.
“Teams can do it. You look at the table now and there are teams up there that no-one was predicting at the start of the season. Hopefully we can be one of those teams.”
