Past meetings: Newcastle v Swans

10th January
First team

As the Swans get set to face Newcastle United at St James’ Park this weekend, we look back to at some previous encounters between the clubs.

Here, we recall three past meetings in the Premier League.

Newcastle 2 Swans 3
Premier League – April 25, 2015

The Swans reached their record points total in a Premier League season as they came from behind to inflict a seventh straight defeat on Newcastle.
Ayoze Perez gave the Magpies the lead after 20 minutes, but the Swans levelled on the stroke of half-time when Nelson Oliveira headed in Gylfi Sigurdsson’s corner.
Sigurdsson then put the visitors in front shortly after the break, rounding off a sweeping move with a neat finish, before Jack Cork executed a nice one-two with Oliveira to make it 3-1.
Siem de Jong pulled one back for the hosts to set up a nervy finish, but Garry Monk’s men held on to stretch their unbeaten run to six games.

Newcastle 1 Swans 2
Premier League – April 19, 2014

Wilfried Bony’s stoppage-time penalty moved the Swans six points clear of the relegation zone with three matches of the season remaining.
Newcastle were on a run of four successive defeats but took the lead in the 23rd minute when Shola Ameobi slotted home after linking up with Luuk de Jong.
The Swans, who were under the guidance of interim boss Garry Monk, hit back just before half-time as Bony rose highest to head past Tim Krul.
It looked like the spoils would be shared until the dying seconds of the contest, when substitute Marvin Emnes was fouled by Cheick Tiote in the box.
Bony stepped up and coolly sent Krul the wrong way to wrap up the points for the visitors.

Newcastle 1 Swans 2
Premier League – November 17, 2012

Michu and Jonathan de Guzman were on target as the Swans recorded their first victory over Newcastle in 32 years.
After a goalless first half, Michael Laudrup's Swans took the lead on 58 minutes. Pablo Hernandez pounced on a poor clearance by Tim Krul, before crossing for Michu to head home his eighth goal of the season.
The win was secured three minutes from time as Krul could only parry Danny Graham’s shot into the path of de Guzman, who made no mistake in dispatching the rebound.
Demba Ba grabbed a consolation in stoppage time for the Magpies.
