First team

As the Swans get set to face Southampton in a crunch Premier League fixture on Tuesday, we look back at some previous encounters between the clubs.

Here we recall past meetings in the Premier League, the Championship and the old First Division.

Swans 2 Southampton 1

Premier League – January 31, 2017

The Swans had just chalked up that unforgettable 3-2 victory at Liverpool as they returned home to face Southampton.

Paul Clement’s team were desperate to build on their success at Anfield by delivering back-to-back victories for the first time all season.

And they did exactly that thanks to another spirited display.

The Swans went ahead shortly before half-time when Alfie Mawson nodded home from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s corner.

However, the Saints levelled just before the hour when a slick passing move saw Shane Long steer the ball into the net.

The Swans found a response, with debutant Luciano Narsingh crossing for Sigurdsson to score the winner.

Swans 3 Southampton 0

Championship – October 25, 2008

Roberto Martinez’s Swans were doing a fine job of settling into life as a Championship team, and they proved as much with an emphatic home victory over struggling Southampton.

The previous season’s League One champions had not lost a home game since promotion, and that unbeaten record was never under threat against the Saints.

Darren Pratley met Tom Butler’s cross to give the Swans a 12th-minute lead.

Jordi Gomez doubled the lead after the break when he swept home after Ferrie Bodde’s free-kick was saved, and Butler rounded off a comfortable win when he netted from the edge of the box.

Swans 3 Southampton 2

Division One – October 23, 1982

John Toshack’s Swans side came back from 1-0 down to win a thrilling contest 3-2.

After the highs of 1981-82, this was a difficult season for the Swans and it would end in relegation.

Yet they managed 10 home league victories across the campaign, and this was one of the most dramatic.

Southampton went ahead a minute before the break through Justin Fashanu, but the home side levelled early in the second half thanks to a Dennis Rofe own goal.

Two minutes later Robbie James put the Swans in front, but Danny Wallace made it 2-2 within 60 seconds.

The flow of goals dried up until two minutes from time, when Bob Latchford’s strike saw the Swans snatch the points.
