Report: Swans U23s 1 Tottenham U23s 2

15th April

Swansea City Under-23s’ relegation from Premier League 2 was confirmed following a 2-1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur at the Liberty Stadium.

Republic of Ireland youth international Troy Parrott struck in each half for the visitors to ensure that the young Swans’ stay in the top flight of development football came to an end.

Liam Cullen was on target for the hosts with his ninth goal of the season, but it was not enough to prevent their return to the second tier after two years.

Both sides went close early on with Parrott hitting the post from distance, while Keiran Evans shot narrowly wide of the target.

The Swans looked dangerous down the right flank with Jordon Garrick showing plenty of pace and delivering some testing low balls into the box.

However, they fell behind in the 40th minute as Parrott curled a wonderful free-kick into the top corner beyond the reach of Steven Benda.

Nevertheless, the hosts responded on the stroke of half-time with Evans driving into the heart of the Spurs defence before feeding Cullen, who calmly slotted past Brandon Austin.

The Swans looked to build on their momentum after the break as Kees De Boer played in Mason Jones-Thomas, but the young forward was brilliantly denied by the goalkeeper from a tight angle.

At the other end, Dilan Markanday hit the post with a long-range effort, while Parrott and Jack Roles shot straight at Benda from good positions.

Spurs continued to threaten in the latter stages with captain Japhet Tanganga went agonisingly close with a ferocious strike from distance.

And they struck the killer blow with 10 minutes remaining; capitalising on a poor clearance with Parrott firing home his second goal of the game.

The Swans hit back immediately with De Boer seeing a shot blocked on the line following a neat cutback by Cullen.

That was as close as the hosts got to the equaliser as their relegation to Premier League 2 Division 2 was confirmed.
