Goncalo Franco Ipswich

Goncalo Franco’s third goal of the season was not enough for Swansea City as they fell to defeat against Ipswich Town at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The Portuguese international’s composed second-half finish had brought Swansea back on level terms, with the hosts having trailed at the break to Jack Clarke’s individual effort.

A deflected Leif Davis strike put the visitors back in front and, after Ben Cabango had seen a header tipped onto the post, substitute Ivan Azon extended Ipswich’s lead and a Cameron Burgess own goal rounded off the scoring.

The Swans had handed a first Championship start to Ishe Samuels-Smith, while Zeidane Inoussa and Zan Vipotnik also came into the side as Kaelan Casey, Liam Cullen and Adam Idah dropped to the bench.

The visitors had been in good form, and they had an early chance when Kasey McAteer got into space down the right and rolled an inviting pass to the far post, where Josh Key covered well to deny Jack Clarke a tap-in.

The Tractor Boys also forced a series of early corners and the Swans spent much of the opening 10 minutes defending in their own half.

Lawrence Vigouroux easily dealt with a George Hirst shot from an acute angle after the visitors had attacked in transition, before Franco volleyed over at the other end.

Ipswich worked McAteer into space down the right flank again on the half-hour, but the winger’s drilled cross had too much on it for any red shirt to apply a finishing touch.

Davis chipped a cross into the gloves of Vigouroux before the visitors took the lead eight minutes before the break.

Swansea looked to have ended an Ipswich attack when the took the ball from Clarke and looked to counter, but possession was given away cheaply and the winger regathered the ball to drive forward and send an unerring low shot into the bottom corner.

Vigouroux clawed away a looping Jacob Greaves header a few minutes later and Ipswich retained their advantage at the break.

Alan Sheehan sent on Cullen and Ronald for Melker Widell and Samuels-Smith at the break, but McAteer soon wasted a good Ipswich chance when he got a foot to a header across goal but lifted it over the bar.

Swansea made the most of the let off and levelled.

Good build-up ended with Franco steering the ball into the bottom corner from Josh Tymon’s low cross.

That lit a spark under Swansea and they enjoyed their first extended spell of pressure as they camped around the Ipswich area and swarmed all over the visitors.

But they fell behind for a second time when a quick counter released Davis into acres of space down the Ipswich left, and his low strike took a deflection off Burgess to wrongfoot Vigouroux and bobble its way into the net.

Swansea sought to reply again, with Inoussa driving past his marker into the area, only to slip and lose his footing as he was set to steady himself to shoot.

At the other end, Marcelino Nunez ruffled the side-netting with a venomous curling strike just past the hour.

But Cabango went closer still for the Swans when his powerful header from a Tymon corner was somehow tipped onto the post by Walton, and the away side scrambled clear as the ball came back across goal.

Walton then punched away a long-range strike from substitute Jisung Eom but Ipswich lifted the pressure and clinched the win when Azon nodded in at the far post after Vigouroux had brilliantly managed to get a hand to Dara O’Shea’s header.

And Burgess then turned a cross into his own net following an incisive Ipswich counter inside the final 10 minutes.
