Report | Swansea City 1 Southampton 2
Swansea City were denied a point as Cameron Archer struck a last-gasp winner for Southampton at the Swansea.com Stadium.
Facing a Saints side unbeaten in 18 games and on the best run of any team in the country, the Swans gave as good as they got in a full-blooded encounter, and a bright start was rewarded when Marko Stamenic opened the scoring from close range.
The Swans retained that lead at the break, and probably should have been a man to the good at the interval too after Flynn Downes’ elbow to the face of Liam Cullen only resulted in a booking.
Shea Charles levelled for Saints after the break, but it was the hosts who had the better chances in the final stages, with Goncalo Franco and Gustavo Nunes unable to convert.
But Archer would volley home in the final seconds of the 90 to further boost the visitors' chase of an automatic promotion spot.
Nevertheless, this was another showing that underlined the improvements the Swans are making under Vitor Matos, not that it will be any immediate comfort to the head coach or his players given the gut-wrenching manner of the defeat.
The Swans had shown two changes from the win at Leicester City as Franco and Cullen came in for Nunes and Leo Walta.
Southampton, meanwhile, made six changes from their midweek win over Blackburn as Leo Scienza, Nathan Wood, Flynn Downes, Caspar Jander, Finn Azaz and Ross Stewart came into their side.
The hosts made a purposeful start, with Jisung Eom getting into space down the right, and Sam Parker ably backing him up with a couple of driving forays.
Saints began to assert themselves around 15 minutes in, penning the hosts in their own half and it took a scrambled clearance at the far post to avert danger after Stewart had advanced and picked out Scienza.
And the Swans made the most of their defensive discipline by breaking away up the other end to take the lead.
Eom delivered a deep cross that Zan Vipotnik nodded back across goal where Stamenic was on hand to volley in from point-blank range.
Seconds later and a lovely piece of skill from Widell saw the Sweden international drive the Swans forward again and produce an excellent strike from distance that forced Daniel Peretz to parry.
Stamenic then made an important tackle as Stewart threatened to wrestle his way in on goal at the other end, before an ugly challenge on Cullen by Downes – that should have seen the Southampton man sent off as he turned his body and elbowed the Wales international in the face - sparked a melee that ended with the former Swansea midfielder only being booked.
Widell was catching the eye and a superb flick sent Josh Tymon into space. The full-back’s deep cross was not dealt with by Wood, but Eom could not control the ball as it arrived to him running at full speed.
There was a real edge to proceedings, with plenty of bite in the challenges, but Swansea stayed disciplined to retain their lead at the break, with Lawrence Vigouroux twice claiming dangerous low deliveries from Scienza with authority, before saving from James Bree.
Southampton started the second half strongly, with Ben Cabango making an excellent block from Caspar Jander’s shot, before a number of white shirts put bodies on the line to clear from a prolonged scramble in the Swansea area.
The hosts were then denied what looked a strong penalty claim when Eom had his shirt pulled as he broke past Wood into the area, with Widell then producing a lung-bursting recovery run to prevent Southampton having a clear sight of goal as they counter-attacked.
Vigouroux tipped a Stewart header over the bar, but he could do nothing when a flick on from the resulting corner was turned in by substitute Charles.
Swansea responded well to the setback, Eom heading wide from a hooked Franco cross and substitutes Joel Ward, Malick Yalcouye and Nunes adding fresh legs.
They thought they had retaken the lead when Nunes and Stamenic led an excellent attack which also included Eom and Adam Idah. The ball eventually fell for Nunes, but his strike was deflected wide of the target.
Franco then dragged an effort wide after an outstanding challenge and driving run by Yalcouye.
