Report | Swansea City U21s 1 West Brom U21s 1
Sammy Henia-Kamau's 96th-minute equaliser salvaged a point in Swansea City Under-21s' penultimate Premier League Cup group-stage fixture against West Bromwich Albion on Friday evening.
Both goals came at the end of the second half, with Akeel Higgins converting from the spot. Then substitute Henia-Kamau would equalise with 60 seconds left on the clock in stoppage time.
The Swans were down the 10 men with 30 minutes played when Sebastian Dabrowski was shown a straight red card.
It was a quick start for both teams, with early chances all hitting the post. Ollie Bostock and Esosa Sule both had strong volleys rattle the far post before Wilson's lofted ball down the other was seemingly on its way in, for it to bounce off the crossbar at the last second.
The Swans were playing good football in the Baggies' half, and created two more chances when Ben Lloyd saw a shot blocked from close range before Wilson sent a low effort across the face of goal.
Swansea were pressing high, and some brilliant work from Richard Faakye in the middle won the ball back before laying off for a Govea and Lloyd one-two, but the former clipped the ball just wide.
And the chances kept coming for the hosts. Ben Cisse was called into action to palm away yet another attack from Wilson
Swansea were dealt with a blow on the half-hour mark which saw Dabrowski being shown a straight red card for bring down Reece Hall.
West Brom capitalised on their numerical advantage and piled on the pressure. They found the net before the break through Sule, but to the Swans' luck it was ruled offside.
Evan Watts was forced off his line after the restart, and superbly blocked Sule's solo effort on the edge of the penalty area.
Cisse denied a clear-cut chance for the Swans on the hour mark. A superb run from Wilson down the left picked out Nzingo in the six-yard box only for the Irishman's effort to go straight in the hands of the Baggies stopper.
The West Brom keeper stopped yet another strong chance moments later, this time Govea's mazy run ended with him drilling the ball into Cisse's palms.
Despite a strong showing from the hosts, West Brom broke the deadlock with five minutes left of normal time.
Whitwell was brought down in the area, and teammate Higgins made no mistake dispatching the ball down the middle of the net.
Morgan Bates was introduced with less than 10 minutes remaining, and immediately caused trouble in front of goal, however, Cisse proved strong again and blocked the youngster's attempt on goal.
However, the Swans did not give up, with a point vital to their qualification, deservedly got the equaliser with 60 seconds remaining, and it was Henia-Kamau who finished from Lloyd's delivery into the area.
