Report | Swansea City Women 4 Cardiff Met Women 0
Swansea City Women booked their place in the quarter finals of the Genero Adran Trophy after a comfortable victory over Cardiff Met at Llandarcy.
The Swans brought an end to the Archers’ eight-game unbeaten run, while also booking their place in the last eight of the competition by extending their winning sequence to four games.
A brace from Aimee Deacon and a strike from Stacey John saw the Swans race into a three-goal lead before the break, with Emily Richards adding a late fourth.
The Swans’ defensive structure was excellent, allowing the Archers no clear-cut opportunities across the full 90 minutes.
The home side dominated from the off and the first chance of the game fell to the Swans within the opening minutes, as Emily Thomas found space on the edge of the area, but her strike was comfortably dealt with by former Swans goalkeeper Verity Jones, who parried the effort behind for a corner.
It took the hosts just 13 minutes to break the deadlock, capitalising on an aggressive press to win the ball high up the pitch. Deacon was released and drove into the area before sending a curling effort toward the far corner, which deflected past Jones and into the net.
The Swans continued to look dangerous going forward, with Thomas nearly doubling the lead just before the half hour mark, as a deep ball into the area from Lucy Finch was met by the forward, only for her header to hit the crossbar.
The Swans were rewarded for their control, doubling their lead 10 minutes before half-time when John received the ball on the edge of the area from Richards and unleashed a superb 20-yard strike that sailed over Jones and into the net.
Swansea refused to let up and added a third just eight minutes later, vis some neat link-up play between John and Deacon. Thelatter found space inside the area before calmly firing past Jones for her second of the afternoon and eighth goal of the season.
For the first 25 minutes of the second half, the Swans controlled the game without creating too many clear chances. The best opportunity came from a dangerous Richards corner, which found Eilish Mitchell, but she couldn’t guide her header on target and it drifted wide.
The Swans continued to pose a threat from set pieces as the half went on, with another excellent corner delivery from Richards finding Jess Williams, but her header was sent narrowly wide of the right-hand post.
Met keeper Jones was called into action for the first time in the second half with 18 minutes to play, as Ellie Lake tried her luck from 25 yards, forcing the goalkeeper to tip the effort over the bar.
The Met goalkeeper then made a crucial save just five minutes later to keep the deficit at three, after a loose pass from the Archers defence allowed Chloe Chivers to race onto the ball and advance into the area. However, Jones stood tall and closed the angle well to deny the midfielder before the danger was eventually cleared.
However, theSwans added a fourth goal with nine minutes remaining, as Chivers drove down the right flank and delivered a pinpoint cross across the face of goal, with Richards on hand to convert from close range and round off a superb afternoon’s work for the hosts.
