Report | Swansea City Women 6 Cwmbran Celtic FC Women 0
Swansea City Women booked their place in the Bute Energy Welsh Cup final with a 6-0 victory over Cwmbran Celtic FC Women at Jenner Park.
Braces from Aimee Deacon and Stacey John, along with goals from Taite Trivett and Emily Richards, earned the Swans their first Welsh Cup final appearance since 2018, when they last lifted the trophy.
It was a strong first half from the Swans, with goals from John and a brace from Deacon giving them a three-goal lead at the break, although Cwmbran did threaten on the counter-attack during the opening 45 minutes.
Trivett added a fourth just six minutes into the second half to further extend the Swans’ advantage, before goals in quick succession - John’s second of the afternoon and a finish from Richards – wrapped up an impressive victory and secured a place in the final.
The Swans started well, enjoying early possession, with the first chance falling to Trivett, who met a back-post cross from Chloe Chivers, but her strike was saved by the knee of Amie Preston-Roberts.
A long ball over the top from Cwmbran then found Macey Morris, but her lobbed effort drifted over the bar.
Cwmbran would live to rue that missed opportunity as the Swans took the lead shortly after. A move down the left saw Chivers play the ball to Trivett, who fizzed a dangerous delivery across goal for John to tap home.
Cwmbran responded well, with Casey Daniels finding space for a powerful effort inside the area, but her shot narrowly evaded the target.
The Swans doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark, once again attacking down the left flank. This time Chivers delivered into the area for Deacon, who got in front of her marker to finish.
Morris continued to threaten with her pace on the break, racing past the Swans defence and into the box before lifting the ball over Amelia Forkings, but her effort clipped the crossbar.
A third goal soon followed for the Swans in the closing minutes of the half, as another delivery from the left saw Trivett pick out Deacon, who tapped home from close range for her second of the match.
Trivett joined in on the scoring early in the second half, with John returning the favour for her earlier goal by delivering a deep ball into the area for the winger to convert at the back post and add a fourth for the Swans.
She continued to cause problems down the left, driving in from the flank before attempting to curl an effort into the far top corner, but her strike drifted narrowly wide of the post.
Preston-Roberts was kept busy once again as she denied Trivett, parrying the winger’s initial effort away before the rebound fell to Chivers, whose strike hit the side netting.
Swansea continued to press and added another as John completed her brace. A through ball from Chivers sent the Swans number 12 through on goal, and although her initial effort was well saved by Preston-Roberts, the ball fell kindly for John to tap into an empty net.
Substitute Richards then added a sixth after Chivers had two efforts blocked by the Cwmbran defence. The ball fell to the 24-year-old just outside the area, and she guided a neat finish into the bottom corner.
There was also a late chance for Chivers to get on the scoresheet in the closing minutes, but one of her trademark efforts from outside the area crashed against the crossbar. It mattered little, however, as the full-time whistle soon followed to secure the victory and set up a date at Rodney Parade on April 19.
