Sammy Wynne | A positive derby performance can inspire next generation
Swansea City midfielder Sammy Wynne hopes her team can put on a performance to inspire the next generation of footballers when they take on Cardiff City in Sunday’s south Wales derby at the Swansea.com Stadium (5.10pm).
The Swans face Cardiff for the second time this season - having suffered a 3-0 defeat in September - and have been in excellent recent form, winning their last five matches.
That impressive run has left the Swans just one point behind their rivals, knowing a victory at the Swansea.com Stadium would see them leapfrog their rivals.
And with a crowd expected to include a lot of young supporters, Wynne hopes the Swans can put on a show that can only increase the appeal of the women’s game in south-west Wales.
“We’re really excited for the game. It’s a special match, being the derby, and that adds extra motivation for us,” she said.
“All the girls have trained really well this week, and we feel prepared and are looking forward to it.
“We know what to expect from Cardiff. I think we have learnt a lot since we played them in the first meeting this season but what is most important is we focus on ourselves.
“We have been on a good run since those two stadium games, so we can take a lot of confidence from that.
“These are the games you look forward to when the fixtures come out. Having drawn them in the cup as well, we’ll play them a few times over the season, but it never gets old.
“Your best memories from football can come from games like this if you get them right, and hopefully more memories will be made this weekend.
“Hopefully we will have a good crowd, we always appreciate the support that we get from friends, family and all the fans that come and support us.
“It is important for us as a squad to inspire that next generation as well, and hopefully there will be a lot of younger girls there hoping that one day they get the opportunity to do what we are doing, so we want to give them as good a performance as we can.”
