Steve Cooper believes Ryan Bennett can go from strength to strength in Swansea City colours after making his debut in the draw at Coventry.

The 30-year-old defender joined the Swans from Wolves on deadline day, and was handed a starting role against the Sky Blues at St Andrew’s.

Bennett’s only previous action this season had come in the Checkatrade Trophy, but he was an assured presence in the Swansea backline, and made one crucial challenge to deny Matt Godden as the Coventry striker bore down on goal.

And Cooper feels there is plenty more to come after a solid debut showing.

“I thought it was important to get Ryan out there on the pitch,” said the head coach.

“Obviously, he has experience and know-how, so we were never worried about his understanding of the game, or his reading of the game.

“The key thing is to get him up to speed physically. But he knows that, and he has done it before in his career.

“We were pleased with him, he made one really good tackle at the start of the second half.

“He got us out of trouble there, and there were good defensive headers from set plays and crosses. He did well and he is only going to get better.”
