Young keeper Benda joins Swans U23s squad

Young German keeper Steven Benda has joined Swansea City from 1860 Munich on a three-year deal.

The 18-year-old arrives at the Liberty after being recommended to the club by former Swans keeper Gerhard Tremmel, who is now the club’s European recruitment assistant.

Benda, who is 6ft 4ins, featured for the U23s during their pre-season tour of Northern Ireland in July as he played 45 minutes during the 1-1 draw against Glentoran.

“I am really happy to sign the deal and excited to get started,” said Benda. “The facilities are world class and I think Swansea is the best place for me to develop my football going forward.

“I was advised to come and check out the club by Gerhard. I came in on trial over the summer and fell in love with the place.

“The game here is faster and more physical, so I know I will need to adapt but I am looking forward to seeing what I can achieve over the next three-years.”

Meanwhile, young winger Daniel James has returned to the Swans after his loan spell with Shrewsbury Town was terminated by mutual consent.
