Cullen targets more Blues joy

31st August

Liam Cullen is targeting more joy against Chelsea when Swansea City Under-23s face the Blues at Landore on Sunday (3pm).

The young Swans did the double over Chelsea in Premier League 2 last season, with Cullen finding the net in the 2-0 win at Landore in January.

That was the only league goal of 2017-18 for the forward, who is looking to get off the mark for this campaign.

And he is hopeful the identity of this weekend's opponents will be a lucky omen as he aims to help his side record their first victory of 2018-19.

“When you get your first win, it sets you off and running and that’s what we need,” the 18-year-old said.

“Chelsea have a really good academy. They’ve shown that in previous years by winning titles at all levels.

“I managed to get a goal against them last year and, with a bit of luck, I can do the same again this year.

“I haven’t managed to score yet but, if I keep getting myself in the right areas, the chances will fall to me and eventually one will go in.

“Hopefully, from there I can build and score a few more.”

Cullen goes into Sunday’s game with plenty of momentum after making his first-team debut in the Carabao Cup clash with Crystal Palace on Tuesday.

And he is hopeful that consistency in his performance levels will lead to further chances in Graham Potter’s side.

“Making my debut was brilliant for me,” he added.

“It only gives you extra confidence and motivation to get more opportunities in the future.

“Hopefully, I can keep playing well at under-23 level and the opportunities will come.”
