Defensive resilience the foundation for Wigan win

Steve Cooper praised Swansea City’s defensive resilience as the foundation for their last-gasp win at Wigan.

The Swans claimed a 2-1 victory over the Latics thanks to a late Sam Surridge header from an excellent Connor Roberts cross.

It came after a final half-hour where the visitors had to soak up pressure, with Mike van der Hoorn, Ben Wilmot and Surridge making important challenges.

And, having ensured they remained on level terms, the Swans struck in clinical fashion in stoppage time.

“I wouldn't mind going 3-0 up early and seeing it out,” said Cooper with a smile when asked about the emotion of snatching the win.

“Having gone 1-0 up I think there was an opportunity to continue to play well, dominate the game so we're a little bit frustrated that we didn't capitalise on the good start.

“We’ve given away a poor goal, but Freddie's not had a save to make.

“I know there's been a lot of corners and balls coming into the box, but the reality is we defended them really well.

“When you do that you always give yourselves a chance of winning the game. We left it until really late on, but it was a great cross and a great header and everyone is very, very happy.

“Wigan are unbeaten here this year and amassed a load of their points at home last year as well. We knew that coming into the game.

“We said to the players that they are a really good team at home. Paul Cook is an excellent manager, he's never done a bad job.

“We knew it was going to be tough. Even if we did have more control, we still knew there'd be moments we had to handle, but we did.”
