Graham Potter says he has high hopes for George Byers after the Swansea City midfielder triggered an extension to his contract that ties him to the club until 2021.

Byers has been one of a number of players to make a first-team breakthrough this term, and has made a dozen appearances so far.

He put pen to paper on a two-year deal in the summer of 2018, and his first-team involvement has subsequently activated a clause adding an additional 12 months to his terms.

The 22-year-old - the Swans' Under-23 player of the year for 2017-18 - has started the last five games in all competitions, scoring his first senior goals in victories over Millwall and Brentford at the Liberty Stadium.

Manager Potter has been impressed by what he has seen of the former Watford man, and hopes he will continue to develop and improve with Swansea.

"We have high hopes for George, he has come in and shown his quality," said Potter.

"He has scored goals, taken on shots, shown good passing ability and he reads the game very well.

"He has got an intelligent football brain, and can see the picture and make decisions well.

"He has been fighting hard and waiting to get in the team. He has had to be patient but he does his best every day.

"He wants to be a good footballer and he tries very hard."
