Potter only has eyes for Reading

Graham Potter insists he is focusing on Saturday, not the whole season, as he bids to ensure Swansea City thrive in 2018-19.

Potter’s men are just six points off top spot in the Championship following their midweek victory over Blackburn Rovers.

But the Swans boss has batted away talk about whether his team might be competing for a top-six spot come the spring.

Instead Potter stressed that his only concern for the moment is coming up with a game-plan for Saturday’s clash with Reading at the Liberty Stadium (3pm).

“I think my expectations about the Championship now are the same as they were at the start of the season,” Potter said.

“But as ever, we just focus on the next match and on trying to win that.

“We need to be competitive in every game we play. That’s what I said when I took over and that’s how I feel now.

“I don’t want to be one of those managers who is asking people for time. I don’t think supporters want to hear that.

“The supporters want to see a team who they feel can go into any game and win, so worrying about where we might be in April or May is far from my thoughts right now.

“Let’s just focus on trying to win the next match.”

The Swans head into the Reading clash in upbeat mood as a result of the Blackburn triumph.

Potter’s team were in trouble at half-time in midweek after Charlie Mulgrew’s penalty, but they stormed back into the contest after the break to claim a first win in four games.

“The response was fantastic,” Potter added.

“On reflection the first half probably wasn’t as bad as we felt at the time, although it wasn’t good and there were things we needed to fix.

“But we played some really good football in the second half and scored three goals. Blackburn had a couple of big chances too – that’s the nature of the game.

“We just need to carry on and keep improving and get ready for another big challenge against Reading.”
