Swansea City Ladies kick off their Welsh Premier Women’s League title defence as they travel to rivals Cardiff City on Sunday (4pm).

The Swans haven’t played a competitive match since last season was curtailed in March as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The visitors travel to the capital with the hope of carrying on their superb form from last season, which saw them only drop two points in the entire campaign.

Ian Owen’s side have been back in training since August and earned themselves a 2-1 victory against National League side Exeter City in a pre-season friendly.

The match is set to make Welsh football history, with it being the first Welsh Premier Women’s League match to be televised live on S4C. Sgorio’s coverage starts at 3.50pm.

Pre-match views

Swansea City Ladies manager Ian Owen

Ian Owen:  “Every game is important but to get off to a good start is vital.

“Everyone is excited to get the league under way after such a long lay-off, the players are fresh and raring to go.

“Cardiff are a good well-coached team, so we will need to be at our best, but we will concentrate on our own game and the things our players need to do. It should be a good game.”

The last time the two South Wales rivals played against each other it ended in a 0-0 stalemate, which proved to be the only points the Swans dropped last season.

There was a big shout for a penalty towards the end for Ian Owen’s side, however, nothing was awarded and the sides could not be separated.
